The Music Lead at Redstart is: Mrs J Preston
Intent
At The Redstart Primary School, we believe children should have many opportunities to express themselves musically, and we aim to provide them with the skills and techniques to ensure they can develop musically.
In line with the National Curriculum we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation.
In order to achieve this, pupils are taught the following skills within a variety of lessons across the academic year to:
- Listen and appraise.
- Develop music skills through musical games, singing and learning to play musical instruments with control (including improvisation and composition).
- Prepare and execute performances (in class for peers, in parent attended assemblies, in celebratory performances like Christmas and end of year plays).
Implementation
The school has invested in a music scheme called ‘Charanga’. The scheme has clear lesson plans, and guides the learners through all the skills needed. The scheme has been designed to ensure that all aspects of music: listening, singing, playing instruments, composition and performance, are all developed as children move through the school.
Impact
The impact of music at Redstart is seen in a number of ways.
- Evidence from music lessons and performances.
- Teacher assessment.
- Discussions with children.
Records of these are kept in subject leader files and on the school drive.
