The Curriculum Lead for PE is: Addie Douglass
Intent
At The Redstart Primary School, our mission is to create positive relationships with physical activity for life. Developing PE is not purely physical development; in order to develop a love and understanding of PE it is important to develop other aspects too:
- Social
- Cognitive
- Creative
- Personal
- Health and Fitness
In line with National Curriculum aims, we believe a high-quality physical education should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.
The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
- are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- engage in competitive sports and activities.
- lead healthy, active lives.
- develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.
- engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
- develop balance, agility and coordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.
- perform dances using simple movement patterns.
- communicate, collaborate and compete with each other.
- They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
- Pupils should be taught to: use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination with other skills.
- apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Implementation
At Redstart we have adopted the REAL PE scheme of work. This is a carefully-structured programme written by the company Create Development. We share the vision of the creator of the REAL PE scheme:
“Creating a culture where PE is joyful opposed to hurtful – where children develop self-esteem, connectivity with others and critical thinking.” Ronnie Heath, Managing Director, Create
Real PE is, first and foremost, a philosophy and approach which aims to transform how we teach PE in order to include challenge and support every child. It supports our staff to deliver PE that will have a significant impact on learners.
There are two main golden threads running through all our lessons:
- Fundamental movement skills (coordination/agility/balance).
- Six learning behaviour ‘cogs’ (cognitive, creative, applying physical, social, personal, health and fitness).
This model ensures that we cover the three pillars of PE progression: motor competence; rules, strategies and tactics; and healthy participation.
The online Jasmine planning tool supports staff with their delivery of PE and having been a REAL Legacy school for four years, we have had extensive expert support from highly-qualified PE specialists. We still maintain regular contact with them to ensure all our staff are fully supported. This online tool provides training videos and online seminars to further support professional development. Jasmine also includes a larger suite of resources including Real Dance, Real Gym and Real Foundations (currently used by our pre-school to prepare the children for our school PE curriculum).
As well as developing high quality PE lessons across the school, we also raise the profile of sport and daily physical activity in the school by providing:
- Intra-school competition – all children in the school are divided into houses and each house has house captains. The house captains are responsible for organising competitions within the school that staff oversee at lunchtimes. We have lunch time house competitions in football, tag rugby, rounders, bench ball, netball and even a quiz.
- Inter-school competition – we have a busy schedule of sporting events organised by our local PE hub that take place at the local secondary school. Children attend events for football, tag rugby, cross country running, cricket, dance, swimming etc.
- Running track challenges – children can use the all weather running track to complete laps that contribute towards house points.
Impact
The impact of PE at Redstart is seen in a number of ways.
- Learning walks undertaken by the PE lead and the school curriculum lead.
- Lesson observations.
- Discussions with children.
- Participation and achievements in sports competitions across the county.
