Computing

The Curriculum Leader for Computing is: Mr D Slingsby

Intent

At The Redstart Primary School we believe that children should leave their primary school education with good, basic computing skills, as well as an understanding of the uses and dangers of information technology. We recognise the significant role that technology plays in society and how the children are ‘digital citizens’ in an ever-changing ‘digital world’.

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to:

  • equip pupils to use computational thinking and creativity.
  • teach the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.
  • ensure that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
  • ensure that all pupils can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including algorithms and data representation.
  • teach pupils to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies, recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content.

Implementation

The Redstart Primary School uses the ‘Teach Computing’ curriculum from the NCCE (National Centre for Computing Education). Across the two key stages there are modules focusing on:

  • Algorithms
  • Computer systems
  • Creating media
  • Data & Information
  • Effective use of tools
  • Impact of technology
  • Networks
  • Programming
  • Safety & security

The children learn elements of these areas in their modules which follow a roadmap which builds on their previous learning and prepares them with a solid foundation for KS3 and beyond.

We also have a full subscription to Discovery Education Coding which is used in conjunction with Teach Computing. Coding is taught through Discovery Education Coding’s lessons which focuses on programming and coding.

In using Teach Computing and Discovery Education together, we have lessons and activities which cover the basics of computer teaching at Redstart. Chromebooks are used in KS1 and KS2 alongside iPads. They can also use word processing and spreadsheet software to present work. A number of apps such Spelling Shed are also used to enhance other subject areas such as mathematics, spelling, and reading. In addition to this we have access to Beebots and interactive whiteboards (IWB) in KS1 and Crumble kits in KS2, among others.

Impact

The impact of computing at Redstart is seen in several ways. These are through:

  • Learning walks
  • Book scrutinies
  • Discussions with children
  • Children confidently using digital technologies to support and enhance their learning
