At The Redstart Primary School we believe that children should leave their primary school education with good, basic computing skills, as well as an understanding of the uses and dangers of information technology. We recognise the significant role that technology plays in society and how the children are ‘digital citizens’ in an ever-changing ‘digital world’.

The Redstart Primary School uses the ‘Teach Computing’ curriculum from the NCCE (National Centre for Computing Education). Across the two key stages there are modules focusing on:
The children learn elements of these areas in their modules which follow a roadmap which builds on their previous learning and prepares them with a solid foundation for KS3 and beyond.
We also have a full subscription to Discovery Education Coding which is used in conjunction with Teach Computing. Coding is taught through Discovery Education Coding’s lessons which focuses on programming and coding.
In using Teach Computing and Discovery Education together, we have lessons and activities which cover the basics of computer teaching at Redstart. Chromebooks are used in KS1 and KS2 alongside iPads. They can also use word processing and spreadsheet software to present work. A number of apps such Spelling Shed are also used to enhance other subject areas such as mathematics, spelling, and reading. In addition to this we have access to Beebots and interactive whiteboards (IWB) in KS1 and Crumble kits in KS2, among others.
